Speak Your Truth Even If Your Voice Shakes

“Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”

Matthew 12:34c

The throat chakra is about communication with God, ourselves, and others. Its element is sound and its ancient name means, “extraordinarily pure”. It is located in the throat at the level of the Adam’s apple. It is about speaking, hearing, and resonance. In this space we experience healthy expression, listening, and worship.

Words are powerful and important. In fact, they are so significant, that in John 1:14 Jesus Himself is called the “Word made flesh”. Our words have the power to hurt and the power to heal. In Ephesians 4:15 we are urged to “speak the truth in love”. In Luke 6:45 Jesus says, “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.” Our hearts (chakra four) and our mouths/throats (chakra five) are deeply interconnected. To tell the truth we must have purity of heart.

The ancient name of the fifth chakra means “extraordinarily pure”. Purity only comes from refinement. It is when we are steeped in a close relationship with God, asking Him to reveal all of who we are, that purity of mind and heart come to fruition. However, speaking truth requires the discipline of listening. The apostle James said, “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry,” (James 1:19). When we learn to listen well, we are better able to connect with the one to whom we are listening. We must practice the art and discipline of surrendering our desire to speak so that we might lean into what is being said.

In addition to ineffective listening, lies are a powerful dysfunction of the throat chakra. This is why we must continually come back to the truth of God’s love and acceptance. Whenever we fall into jealousy or contempt, chances are we believe a lie about God, ourselves, and/or others. We must stop and ask God to kindly reveal the lie, and ask for forgiveness for believing it rather than the truth of His love. Whenever we have a problem with our throat chakra, we must look at what is happening in our hearts.
